Thu Sep 19 06:47:00 UTC 2024: ## Erick Thohir Defends Naturalization of Mees Hilgers and Eliano Reijnders for Indonesian National Team

**Jakarta, September 19, 2024** – Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) chairman, Erick Thohir, has defended the naturalization program for the national team, specifically the inclusion of Mees Hilgers and Eliano Reijnders, amidst criticism from some quarters.

Hilgers and Reijnders, both Dutch players with Indonesian heritage, have been granted citizenship and are expected to join the team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

Responding to criticism regarding the increasing number of naturalized players in the national team, Thohir highlighted the players’ Indonesian bloodlines and their deep connection to the country. He pointed out that Hilgers’ mother is from Manado and Reijnders’ mother is from Maluku, both regions in Indonesia.

“They are very Indonesian. Don’t question their love for the Red and White flag,” Thohir stated after meeting with the Minister of Law and Human Rights.

He further emphasized that naturalization is a common practice in global football, citing examples of teams like the Netherlands, France, Spain, and Italy who have all utilized naturalized players. Thohir also highlighted a recent incident where Hilgers, while playing for his club, was gifted an Indonesian flag and proudly posed with it, demonstrating his national pride.

The PSSI chairman acknowledges the differing opinions on the naturalization program, but maintains that the process is being carried out with integrity and respect for the players’ Indonesian heritage.

The two new additions are expected to strengthen the national team, which recently secured two draws against World Cup regulars, Saudi Arabia and Australia, in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
