**New York, September 19, 2024** – US intelligence agencies have accused Iranian cyberattackers of attempting to influence the upcoming US presidential election by hacking into former President Donald Trump’s campaign and sharing stolen information with individuals associated with Joe Biden’s campaign.
According to a joint statement released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the hackers sent emails containing excerpts from stolen campaign material to Biden’s staff in an attempt to influence the election. However, none of the individuals associated with Biden’s campaign responded to the emails.
This incident marks the second time US authorities have accused Iran of attempting to interfere in the 2024 election. In August, the same agencies attributed a hack to Iran, claiming they were seeking to influence the outcome. Iran has vehemently denied both allegations.
The US statement also highlighted the growing threat of foreign influence activities on the US election, specifically mentioning Russia, Iran, and China as actors trying to exacerbate societal divisions for their own benefit.
The Trump campaign, while confirming they had been targeted, accused Iran of actively interfering in the election to help Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris.
The Harris campaign, on the other hand, confirmed in August that it had been targeted by foreign hackers but did not specify the country behind the attack.
The US goes to the polls on November 5th, and both campaigns have expressed concerns about ongoing cyberattacks.
This incident echoes the 2016 election, where a hack of Democratic National Committee emails, blamed on Russia, exposed internal communications and fueled allegations of foreign interference.
