Thu Sep 19 07:27:35 UTC 2024: ## Air Force Reserve Chief Highlights Readiness Concerns Amidst Great Power Competition

**NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. (AFNS)** – Lt. Gen. John Healy, Chief of the Air Force Reserve and commander of Air Force Reserve Command, emphasized the need for increased exercises and improved understanding of authorities to ensure the Reserve’s readiness for Great Power Competition (GPC) during the Air and Space Forces Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference.

Healy, speaking on a panel focused on exercising for GPC, highlighted the current lack of sufficient training opportunities. “We don’t have enough exercises in order to be effective,” he stated, referencing his experience overseeing exercises in Europe.

Healy stressed the importance of both formal exercises and understanding the legal framework that governs the Reserve’s interaction with the active component. “Authorities are critical,” he said, explaining that clear lines of authority are essential for the active component to access Reserve capabilities efficiently.

The panel also discussed integrating training and exercises with regional allies and partners. Healy explained that the Air Force Reserve is proactively seeking opportunities to formalize relationships with allies through collaborative training initiatives.

When discussing the Air Force Reserve’s preparations for Total Force operations, Healy highlighted the upcoming stand-up of the first Deployable Combat Wing, a crucial step in integrating Reserve forces. He emphasized the need for a “culture change” within the Reserve, pushing for increased risk-taking and preparation for deployment.

“We’ve got to prioritize exercises,” Healy concluded. “It’s got to be a certification event; it’s got to be allies and partners. We’re going to continue to press to make sure these are worthwhile exercises that move the ball forward.”

Healy’s remarks underscore the Air Force Reserve’s commitment to readiness and its vital role in facing the challenges of GPC.
