Thu Sep 19 07:15:46 UTC 2024: ## AfD Poised to Challenge SPD in Brandenburg Election, Raising Stakes for Scholz

**BERLIN** – Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is on track to win the upcoming election in Brandenburg, a traditional stronghold of the Social Democrats (SPD), posing a serious challenge to Chancellor Olaf Scholz and potentially impacting his political future.

The election, taking place on Sunday, is seen as a crucial test for Scholz, who faces growing pressure from within his own party following a series of setbacks, including high inflation, the fallout from the Ukraine war, and rising migrant numbers.

Polls show the AfD with a narrow lead of around 3 points, garnering nearly 30% of the vote. The SPD, despite narrowing the gap recently, is still facing an uphill battle to maintain control of the state, which they have governed since German reunification.

“If the SPD doesn’t win here, that would be a massive break,” said Philipp Thomeczek, a politics professor at Potsdam University.

The Brandenburg election is particularly significant as it comes a year ahead of the national election, potentially shaping the landscape for the upcoming race. A strong showing by the AfD could further weaken Scholz’s position within the SPD and raise questions about his ability to lead the party into the next federal election.

Despite the looming threat, Scholz has been largely absent from the Brandenburg campaign, relying instead on the popularity of the state premier, Dietmar Woidke. However, a defeat in Brandenburg could trigger a backlash against Scholz, potentially leading to calls for him to step aside and be replaced by a more charismatic figure like Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.

The AfD, known for its nationalist agenda, has capitalized on public anxieties over immigration, the energy transition, and the war in Ukraine. Their anti-establishment rhetoric and focus on traditional values have resonated with some voters in Brandenburg, a state with a mixed economic picture and a growing divide between prosperous areas and struggling rural communities.

Should the SPD lose Brandenburg, it could pave the way for a coalition government led by the Christian Democrats (CDU) under their newly appointed chancellor candidate, Friedrich Merz. This could further destabilize the SPD and potentially trigger an internal revolt against Scholz.

The Brandenburg election promises to be a closely watched contest, with far-reaching implications for German politics and the future of Olaf Scholz’s leadership.
