**Melbourne, Australia:** Dulip Samaraweera, a former Sri Lankan Test cricketer, has been banned from holding any positions within Australian cricket for 20 years following an investigation into serious breaches of the sport’s code of conduct. The decision was reached by the Cricket Australia (CA) Conduct Commission, which found that Samaraweera engaged in inappropriate behaviour while employed by Cricket Victoria.
The investigation stemmed from allegations of historic misconduct against Samaraweera, which occurred during his time as a coach with Cricket Victoria. Specifically, the Conduct Commission found that he violated section 2.23 of the CA’s Code of Conduct, which outlines unacceptable conduct, including actions detrimental to the spirit of cricket and the reputation of the sport.
Samaraweera, who played seven Tests and five ODIs for Sri Lanka between 1993 and 1995, initially joined Cricket Victoria as a batting coach in 2008. He was later appointed as interim head coach of the women’s team in November 2022 before assuming the full-time role in May 2023. However, he resigned from the position less than two weeks after his appointment.
“CA and CV are committed to providing a safe environment for all players and employees,” stated Cricket Australia in a press release. “The welfare of those subjected to mistreatment is paramount. We strongly encourage the reporting of inappropriate behaviours.”
This ban comes as a significant blow to Samaraweera’s career in Australian cricket. He was poised to coach the Australia A women’s team in a multi-format series against India A later this year but was stood down following the allegations. This 20-year ban effectively ends his coaching aspirations within the Australian cricketing system.
