Thu Sep 19 07:27:40 UTC 2024: ## Estonia Supports UN Resolution Calling for End to Israeli Occupation

**New York, September 18th** – Estonia joined a majority of UN member states in voting in favor of a resolution calling on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territory. The resolution, which was submitted by Palestine, expresses support for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and its ruling that Israel’s occupation is unlawful.

The Estonian Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, stated that Estonia firmly believes in the importance of a rules-based international order and that international law must be applied to all UN member states. The Minister also emphasized that the majority of Nordic and Baltic states voted in favor of the resolution, influencing Estonia’s decision.

While supporting the resolution, Estonia clarified its stance on the issue. “Our vote does not change our firm position that Israel has the inalienable right to self-defense and that Hamas is a terrorist organization whose actions should be condemned fully,” Tsahkna stated. Estonia submitted an explanatory declaration alongside its vote, stressing the need to consider Israel’s legitimate security interests, which are not explicitly addressed in the resolution.

It is important to note that UN General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, but they serve as a reflection of the position of the majority of member states on significant international issues.
