**Nottingham, England:** Travis Head’s blistering 154 not out powered Australia to a comprehensive 7-wicket victory over England in the first ODI of the five-match series at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
Head, in red-hot form, anchored the chase with crucial partnerships with Steve Smith, Cameron Green, and Marnus Labuschagne (77 not out). This victory marks Australia’s 13th consecutive win in ODI cricket, further solidifying their dominance in the format.
England, led by Harry Brook, elected to bat first. A 120-run stand between Ben Duckett and Will Jacks (62) steadied the ship after Phil Salt’s early dismissal. However, Adam Zampa removed Jacks, and Duckett fell just short of a century, ending with 95. Labuschagne (3 for 39) and Zampa (3 for 49) were the pick of the bowlers, while Head chipped in with 2 for 34. England eventually posted 315 for 6, with contributions from Brook (39), Jamie Smith (23), and Jacob Bethell (35).
In reply, Australia lost captain Mitchell Marsh early (10), but Head’s aggressive approach kept the visitors on track. He formed crucial partnerships with Smith (32) and Green (32), consistently hitting boundaries. A 148-run fourth-wicket stand between Head and Labuschagne sealed the victory for Australia in just 44 overs.
Head’s innings, which included 20 fours and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 119.38, was his sixth ODI century. He was named Player of the Match and remarked, “It’s never too easy, got a bit lucky at the start. Jofra (Archer) bowled a hell of a spell but when you can get through it, there are runs on offer. We did well to keep England at 315, then to survive the early spell from Jofra and build some partnerships was great.”
The victory gives Australia a 1-0 lead in the series. The second ODI will be played at Headingley, Leeds on Saturday.
