Fri Sep 20 05:56:26 UTC 2024: ## Australia Cruises to Victory in First ODI Against England with Head’s Masterclass

**NOTTINGHAM, England:** Australia secured a dominant 13th consecutive ODI victory, overpowering England by seven wickets in the first match of the five-game series at Trent Bridge on Thursday. The win was fueled by a breathtaking innings from Travis Head, who smashed a career-best 154 not out to propel Australia to a successful chase of 316 runs.

Head’s century, his sixth in ODI cricket, came just ten months after his similarly impressive 137 in the World Cup final against India. He unleashed a barrage of 20 fours and five sixes, smashing the highest individual score by an Australian in England. His innings put Australia on a comfortable path to victory with six overs to spare, marking their highest successful ODI chase on English soil.

Earlier, England had set a target of 315 runs after being reduced to 211-2 in the 32nd over. However, Australia’s spinners, including part-timer Marnus Labuschagne (3-39), successfully choked the run rate, eventually restricting England to 315 all out.

Labuschagne, who played a crucial role in the World Cup final run chase, also contributed significantly with an unbeaten 77 runs. The spinners’ dominance, combined with Head’s destructive batting, proved too much for England to handle.

“We were eyeing up a big score, for sure,” said England’s stand-in captain Harry Brook. “It wasn’t meant to be. It was difficult there in the middle against the spinners, we probably didn’t rotate the strike as well as we wanted and we ended up getting a below-par score in the end.”

The second ODI of the series will take place at Headingley on Saturday, where Australia will hope to have senior players Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Glenn Maxwell available after they missed the first match due to illness. However, they will be without pacer Ben Dwarshuis, who sustained a suspected pectoral strain during England’s innings and was ruled out of the match. His absence paved the way for Australia’s successful spin bowling strategy.

The series continues to be a clash of cricketing titans, with both teams eager to prove their dominance on the international stage.
