**Oslo, Norway** – Jailed Cuban dissident leader Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara has been awarded the prestigious Rafto Prize for his fearless opposition to authoritarianism through his artistic work. The Norwegian human rights foundation announced the award on Thursday, highlighting Alcantara’s commitment to democracy and human rights both in Cuba and globally.

Alcantara, a 36-year-old artist and prominent member of the San Isidro Movement, has been imprisoned since 2022 after being sentenced to five years for alleged common crimes. Human rights groups have condemned the trial as a farce, claiming it was politically motivated.

The Rafto Prize, known for recognizing individuals who have fought for human rights and democracy, has previously been awarded to notable figures who later won the Nobel Peace Prize, including Aung San Suu Kyi, Jose Ramos-Horta, Kim Dae-jung, and Shirin Ebadi.

The foundation’s statement emphasized the crucial role of artists in challenging power structures and advocating for fundamental rights. The award seeks to draw attention to Alcantara’s work and the plight of other artists facing repression in Cuba.

International human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have joined the Rafto Foundation in calling for Alcantara’s immediate release.
