Thu Sep 19 07:28:02 UTC 2024: ## FBI Disrupts Massive Botnet Controlled by Chinese Government-Backed Hackers

**Washington, D.C.** – In a major victory against cybercrime, the FBI has successfully disrupted a massive botnet consisting of over 200,000 consumer devices worldwide, controlled by a Chinese government-backed hacking group. The Justice Department announced the operation today, revealing that the botnet was used to steal sensitive information and launch disruptive cyberattacks.

The botnet, infected with malware developed by Integrity Technology Group, a publicly traded company headquartered in Beijing, targeted a variety of consumer devices, including routers, IP cameras, DVRs, and NAS devices. The hackers were able to control these devices remotely, disguised as regular internet traffic.

The FBI, acting on a court order, took control of the hackers’ infrastructure and sent disabling commands to the malware on the infected devices. Despite a DDoS attack launched by the hackers in an attempt to hinder the FBI’s efforts, the operation successfully disrupted the botnet.

“This dynamic operation demonstrates, once again, the Justice Department’s resolve in countering the threats posed by PRC state-sponsored hackers,” said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the National Security Division.

The FBI identified Integrity Technology Group as being responsible for the activities of Flax Typhoon, a hacking group known for targeting government agencies, educational institutions, and critical infrastructure in Taiwan and other locations.

“The targeted hacking of hundreds of thousands of innocent victims in the United States and around the world shows the breadth and aggressiveness of PRC state-sponsored hackers,” said U.S. Attorney Eric G. Olshan for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

The FBI is actively investigating Integrity Technology Group and Flax Typhoon’s computer intrusion activities and urging individuals who believe their devices may have been compromised to report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

This operation highlights the growing threat posed by state-sponsored hacking groups and underscores the need for international cooperation to combat cybercrime. The Justice Department, the FBI, and international partners are committed to disrupting these operations and protecting the safety and security of individuals and institutions worldwide.
