Fri Sep 20 10:32:50 UTC 2024: ## Redlands Coast to Investigate Indoor Sports Facility for 2032 Olympics

**Redlands Coast, QLD -** The Redland City Council has announced plans to explore the feasibility of a new indoor sports facility on the Redlands Coast, with the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics serving as a catalyst for the project.

Council will develop an “Indoor Sports Facility Action Plan” to identify suitable locations, funding requirements, and opportunities to secure at least six new courts. The plan will also consider short-term options like optimizing existing facilities and partnering with schools to increase capacity.

Mayor Jos Mitchell highlighted the growing demand for indoor court space for emerging sports like basketball, pickleball, volleyball, and futsal. “Existing sporting infrastructure across the city is generally aging, has historically focused on outdoor, field-based sports, and is limited,” she said. “Indoor sports facilities also provide equitable access for all and offer a climate-managed environment all year.”

The 2032 Games will present opportunities for Redlands Coast, including potential hosting of pre-games training. A new facility could also host regional, state, or national events, further benefiting the region.

“Contemporary multi-purpose indoor sports facilities incorporate a mix of components such as sports courts, health and fitness facilities, programming and meeting areas, and food and beverage facilities,” said Mayor Mitchell. “These facilities not only seek to maximise usage for sport and recreation but also provide programs for the wider community and can be used for large-scale events.”

Council has identified Cleveland Showgrounds and Pinklands Sporting Complex as potential sites, but the investigation will consider all possibilities. A feasibility study will be conducted on priority sites, with a report outlining the findings presented to Council at a future meeting.
