**Bristol, UK** – Bristol City Women have appointed Stephen Kirby as their new manager, just days before their crucial Women’s Super League match against London City Lionesses on Sunday. Kirby, formerly first-team coach at Leicester City Women, takes over the reins after Lauren Smith stepped down to join the Football Association as England Under-19s head coach.
Kirby brings experience from his time at Leicester, including acting as interim manager alongside Jennifer Foster last season. He has also worked with MK Dons’ academy and development squads.
“It is super exciting and I am ready to kick on and try to get us back to the WSL,” said Kirby. “I have watched both games so far and I have been impressed with the performances. It is a club which fits my style and how I like the game to be played. I hope we can now get us firing on all cylinders.”
Bristol City have drawn their opening two league games against Southampton and Birmingham City. They will be looking to secure their first win of the season against London City Lionesses.
Kirby faces the challenge of guiding the team back to the WSL after their relegation last season. He takes over a team in transition, but one that possesses potential, and is confident he can bring success to the club.
