Thu Sep 19 07:27:41 UTC 2024: ## India’s Ambitious Space Programme Expands: Gaganyaan Mission to Include Space Station Construction

**New Delhi, India** – The Indian government has approved a significant expansion of its ambitious Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, including the construction of the first module of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS-1). This ambitious project, approved by the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to establish India as a major player in long-duration human space missions.

The revised Gaganyaan program will now encompass a total of eight missions, culminating in the launch of BAS-1 by December 2028. The program will focus on demonstrating and validating key technologies required for building and operating the space station. Four missions dedicated to BAS will be conducted alongside four missions already planned under the existing Gaganyaan program.

The original Gaganyaan program, approved in 2018, envisioned sending Indian astronauts to Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The new expansion aligns with the government’s “Amrit Kaal” vision for space exploration, which aims to establish an operational Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035 and launch an Indian crewed lunar mission by 2040.

The decision to include BAS-1 in the Gaganyaan program reflects India’s growing ambition in space exploration and aligns with global trends towards long-duration human space missions. The project will leverage the expertise of ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organisation, in collaboration with industry, academia, and other national agencies.

The government has allocated an additional ₹11,170 crore to the Gaganyaan program, bringing the total funding to ₹20,193 crore. This investment will bolster India’s technological capabilities in human spaceflight and provide a platform for research and development in microgravity environments.

The expanded program is expected to create significant opportunities for India’s youth, particularly in the fields of science, technology, and space research. The resulting innovations and technological spin-offs are anticipated to have a positive impact on various sectors across the country.
