Thu Sep 19 17:47:00 UTC 2024: ## BC Government and First Nations Partner to Provide Affordable Housing in Vancouver

**VANCOUVER -** In a groundbreaking initiative, the British Columbia government and the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations have announced a partnership to make thousands of homes available in Vancouver at 40% below market value.

The agreement will see approximately 2,600 homes, including studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, built on First Nations land. These homes will be offered on a 99-year lease with the government financing the remaining 40% of the purchase price, which will be repaid upon resale or after 25 years.

Premier David Eby hailed the agreement as a “remarkable accomplishment,” stating it will help address the affordability crisis in Vancouver, one of the world’s most expensive real estate markets.

Eligibility requirements include household income thresholds (capped at $131,950 for studios and one-bedroom units), mortgage pre-qualification, and a minimum deposit of 5%.

“The dream of home ownership has been out of reach for too many, for too long, especially here in Vancouver,” said Eby. “This plan will help thousands of middle-class people break into the housing market.”

The first units will be available on the Heather Lands, with registration and eligibility verification beginning next spring. A randomized selection process will determine eligible buyers, prioritizing first-time homeowners.

Eby highlighted the project’s potential for scalability across the province, emphasizing housing as a key focus in the upcoming NDP election platform.

The government’s contribution is estimated at $670 million in loans, which will be recovered through future sales or repayments.

This initiative aims to address the ongoing affordability crisis in Vancouver, attract and retain skilled workers, and ultimately contribute to a thriving economy.
