Thu Sep 19 06:42:32 UTC 2024: ## Australia Reaches 27 Million Population Milestone, But Experts Warn of Challenges

**Canberra, Australia** – Australia’s population has officially reached 27 million, marking a significant milestone for the country. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that the national population grew by 2.3% in the past year, with net overseas migration driving 83% of this growth.

While this milestone represents a growing nation, experts warn of the challenges Australia faces in the future.

“Whenever we hit a population milestone, it gives us cause for pause to think about where we’re headed and what kind of country we want to be,” said Dr. Liz Allen, an Australian National University demographer.

Dr. Allen warns against “population panic” and emphasizes the importance of recognizing the positive contributions of immigration to Australia’s socioeconomic standing. She also highlights the need for long-term planning, particularly in addressing the aging population and infrastructure needs.

“We’ve seen over time in Australia, with successive governments at the federal, state and territory levels, an unwillingness to invest in big spending that exceeds the life of a political cycle,” Dr. Allen stated.

Dr. Chris Martin, a housing policy specialist at the University of New South Wales, emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive housing policy. He criticizes the government’s approach, which he describes as “modest, eye-catching and unusual proposals” rather than a long-term plan.

Dr. Martin argues that the existing social housing system would need to triple in size over the next 20 years to address the current and projected housing needs. He calls for long-term investment and a significant expansion of the social housing sector, which has been underfunded for decades.

The declining birth rate, with a 1.7% decrease from the previous year, further contributes to the urgency of addressing these challenges. Dr. Allen attributes this decline to the difficult conditions faced by young people, including housing affordability, climate change and the rising cost of living.

This milestone serves as a reminder that Australia must proactively plan for its future, addressing issues related to housing, infrastructure, and the well-being of its young generation.
