Fri Sep 20 01:07:32 UTC 2024: ## Barcelona Stumble in Champions League Opener, Lose to Monaco

**Barcelona, Spain** – FC Barcelona’s Champions League campaign got off to a disappointing start with a 2-1 loss to AS Monaco on Tuesday night. The result mirrored the outcome of the Joan Gamper Trophy match just weeks earlier, where Monaco also emerged victorious.

The match was overshadowed by a red card issued to Eric García just ten minutes in, leaving Barcelona to play with ten men for the remainder of the game. Despite the adversity, the Catalan giants put up a valiant fight.

Lamine Yamal, who made history by becoming the second youngest goalscorer in Champions League history, brought Barcelona level with a stunning solo effort. He also surpassed Ansu Fati’s record for Champions League appearances before the age of 18. The return of Ansu Fati, who had been sidelined for 389 days, was another highlight for Barcelona, but ultimately Monaco’s superior firepower proved too much to overcome.

Monaco took the lead through Maghnes Akliouche, who easily navigated Barcelona’s defense before placing the ball out of reach of Marc-André ter Stegen.

Despite Yamal’s equalizer, Monaco restored their lead in the second half when George Ilenikhena converted a long ball from the back.

Barcelona will be looking to rebound in their next Champions League fixture against Young Boys of Switzerland on October 1st. They will first focus on their upcoming La Liga match against Villarreal on Sunday, aiming to secure a much-needed victory.
