Kochi, Kerala – Renowned Malayalam actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away on Friday evening at Lisie Hospital in Kochi. She was 79.
Ponnamma, who had been battling stage 4 cancer since May 2023, was admitted to the hospital on September 3. Her condition deteriorated in recent days, leading to her demise.
A prominent figure in Malayalam cinema, Ponnamma began her acting career at the young age of 14, initially performing in theater. Over her illustrious career, she graced the silver screen in over 1,000 films, earning recognition for her powerful portrayals of maternal roles. She is particularly remembered for playing Mohanlal’s mother in over 50 movies.
Beyond her motherly roles, Ponnamma was a versatile actress who took on various characters, even venturing into negative roles. Her contributions to Malayalam cinema were acknowledged through numerous accolades, including four state awards for best supporting actress.
Ponnamma was married to late filmmaker Mani Swami, with whom she shared a daughter, Bindu. Her mortal remains will be kept at the Municipal Townhall, Kalamassery on Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon for public homage. The cremation will take place at her house premises in Aluva at 4 pm.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences on the passing of the esteemed actress, highlighting her significant contributions as a theater artist and film actor.
Ponnamma’s legacy will be remembered not only for her exceptional acting skills but also for her dedication to the arts. Her departure leaves a void in the Malayalam film industry, but her remarkable performances will continue to inspire generations to come.
