Thu Sep 19 07:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Skoda Enters the Australian EV Market with Enyaq SUV

Skoda has officially launched its first fully-electric vehicle in Australia, the Enyaq medium SUV, entering a burgeoning market dominated by the Tesla Model Y, BYD Atto 3, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6.

The Enyaq, already a success in Europe for four years, arrives in Australia with crucial upgrades for 2024, including increased power, faster charging capabilities, and extended range.

Skoda has strategically priced the Enyaq to be competitive, starting at $69,990 plus on-road costs for the Sportline model, which comes well-equipped with features like a 13-inch infotainment display, matrix LED headlights, electric driver’s seat adjustment, and an electric tailgate.

The Sportline is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 210kW and 545Nm of torque, with an 82kWh battery providing a claimed range of 561km on the WLTP combined cycle.

The top-of-the-range Enyaq RS boasts all the optional features of the Sportline as standard, including an additional front electric motor for all-wheel drive, lowered suspension, and distinctive RS styling. It also comes with a unique Mamba Green paint colour.

While the Enyaq is available as a more squared-off wagon overseas, the Australian market gets the sportier coupe-style SUV. Although sacrificing some boot space and second-row headroom, the coupe profile boasts a lower drag coefficient, improving fuel efficiency.

Interior-wise, the Enyaq offers a more traditional and familiar design compared to competitors like Tesla, Kia, and Hyundai, with a focus on practicality and comfort. However, it may lack the design flair and “specialness” of some rivals.

The Enyaq boasts a generous array of standard safety features, including lane-keep assistance and blind-spot monitoring, and has achieved a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.

Skoda is also emphasizing low running costs and providing extended service plans, as well as exploring novated leasing options for small and medium businesses.

The Enyaq’s modular pouch-style battery design allows for individual cell replacement, enhancing its long-term viability.

The Sportline offers a claimed range of 561km, while the RS achieves 530km. Skoda highlights that range can improve significantly in urban and city driving, reaching up to 696km for the Sportline and 657km for the RS.

Both Sportline and RS deliver a balanced and comfortable driving experience, with the Sportline proving to be the more appealing option, providing sufficient performance for everyday driving without the need for the RS’s added power.

The Enyaq’s arrival in Australia marks a significant step for Skoda in the growing electric vehicle market. While Tesla continues to hold a strong position, the Enyaq offers a compelling alternative with its comprehensive features, competitive pricing, and impressive range.

For those considering an electric SUV, the Enyaq is definitely worth a test drive.
