SIREN, WI – A 12-year-old boy, Owen Beierman, became a hero when he shot and killed a black bear that was attacking his father, Ryan, near their hunting cabin in western Wisconsin.

The incident occurred on September 6th when Ryan and Owen were hunting in the woods. After wounding the bear, the pair spent 20 minutes searching for it before the animal charged, knocking Ryan to the ground. Ryan fired eight shots from his pistol at the bear, but they missed.

The bear then began biting Ryan’s face, arm, and leg. Ryan fought back, striking the bear with his pistol and kicking, but the bear wouldn’t let go.

“The bear was fighting for its life, and I was fighting for mine,” Ryan told the Minnesota Star Tribune. “That’s when I saw a flash from the muzzle of Owen’s rifle.”

Owen’s shot killed the bear, allowing Ryan to push it off him. Ryan suffered serious injuries including a ripped cheek, puncture wounds, and a cut on his arm.

A Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources conservation officer confirmed that the Beiermans’ hunt was legal.
