**Cheshire, UK -** A Cheshire woman who was arrested for sharing false information about the Southport attacker has been released without charge. Bernadette Spofforth, 55, was detained for 36 hours after posting a tweet falsely claiming the suspect was an asylum seeker who had arrived in the UK by boat.
Spofforth stated that she deleted the post and apologized as soon as she realized the information was incorrect. However, she was subsequently arrested and held in a cell for a day and a half. She described the experience as a “nightmare” and expressed concern about how ordinary individuals can be treated in the face of misinformation.
The false information about the suspect, which was also spread by far-right commentators, fueled anti-immigration hostility and unrest in Southport and other parts of the UK. It was later revealed that the misinformation originated from a news website called Channel3 Now, whose editor-in-chief subsequently apologized.
Cheshire Police confirmed that the decision to drop the charges against Spofforth was made due to insufficient evidence. A police spokesman stated, “Following a thorough investigation, a decision has been made that no further action will be taken.”
