Wed Sep 18 11:51:59 UTC 2024: ## Brittney Griner Ejected in Heated Sparks vs. Mercury Game

Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner was ejected from Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks after a physical altercation with rookie Rickea Jackson. The incident occurred late in the second quarter after a missed free throw by Mercury guard Celeste Taylor.

As Jackson and Li Yueru attempted to box out Griner, the two players came into contact, with Griner’s arm making contact with Jackson’s face. This sparked a brief but heated exchange, with Jackson pushing Griner, who responded with a swipe that missed its target.

Despite the scuffle being quickly separated by teammates and coaches, referees issued two technical fouls, resulting in automatic ejections for both players. This marked Jackson’s first career ejection, and despite briefly returning to the court, she received a warm welcome from the crowd. Jackson has been a standout rookie this season, averaging 13.4 points per game.

Griner, who had scored 14 points before the altercation, faced criticism for her actions. However, she defended her passionate play, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “Keep talking from your couches. Y’all wouldn’t last a minute in my shoes. I play with passion. If you can’t handle that, maybe you should find another sport to watch.”

The incident adds to the ongoing controversy surrounding Griner, who recently returned from a year in Russian detention. The Mercury went on to win the game 85-81.
