DENVER – Renowned journalist Ward Lucas, a familiar face at 9NEWS for over three decades, passed away on Sunday at the age of 75. Known for his sharp wit, passion for truth, and dedication to mentoring younger journalists, Lucas left a lasting impact on the Denver media landscape.
Born in Kyoto, Japan, Lucas began his broadcasting career in 1974, eventually joining 9NEWS in 1976. He spent the next four decades covering major events like the DB Cooper hijacking and the Ted Bundy murders. Lucas’ commitment to his craft was evident in his pursuit of the Bundy story, even chartering a private plane to Aspen after the notorious killer escaped from jail.
Lucas’ tireless work earned him over 70 awards, including 11 Emmys. He was inducted into the Heartland Emmys Silver Circle in 2008 and Broadcast Pioneers of Colorado in 2018. After retiring from 9NEWS in 2009, he continued to write, publishing three books about his experiences.
Lucas was also a passionate advocate for the Alzheimer’s Association, serving on their board from 1996 to 2002. He was inspired to dedicate his time to this cause after witnessing his father’s battle with the disease.
