**Hull, UK** – As spider season reaches its peak in September, dog owners are being warned about the potential dangers of popular spider repellents. While many people turn to insect repellents and essential oils to keep these eight-legged creatures at bay, these products can be toxic to pets.
Dr. Anne Baccay, a veterinarian at Cat Minder, cautions that even though most insect repellents are safe when used correctly, some can pose serious risks, especially when used in areas frequented by pets.
Essential oils like tea tree, peppermint, and eucalyptus, while effective against spiders, can be harmful to dogs. Dr. Baccay advises diluting these oils before use and avoiding spraying them in areas where dogs might come into contact with them.
Shop-bought sprays containing chemicals like pyrethrin can also be dangerous if ingested or inhaled by pets. Even products labelled as pet-safe should be used with caution, keeping dogs out of the area until the spray dries and ensuring good ventilation.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE), another popular spider deterrent, can be harmful if inhaled by dogs. Only apply DE to well-ventilated areas and opt for food-grade versions which are much safer. Keep dogs with breathing problems away from areas treated with DE.
Dog owners are urged to remain vigilant for signs of toxicity and seek immediate veterinary attention if their pet shows any adverse reactions.
For pet-friendly spider repellents, consider mixing equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and lightly misting doorways and windowsills. Cedarwood chips, shavings, or essential oil can also act as natural barriers against spiders.
Nic Shacklock of Online-Bedrooms reminds us that sealing up any holes in the home can also prevent spiders from entering.
Remember, while spiders might be unwelcome guests, it is crucial to choose pet-safe methods for keeping them at bay. Read labels carefully, prevent your pets from coming into contact with potentially toxic products, and always ensure adequate ventilation after applying any repellents.
