Wed Sep 18 14:50:58 UTC 2024: ## US Stock Market Opens Mixed Ahead of Fed Decision

**New York, NY** – Major US stock exchanges opened mixed Wednesday morning, with the Dow Jones industrial average falling slightly while the S&P 500 remained largely unchanged and the Nasdaq Composite rose modestly. This mixed performance comes ahead of the Federal Reserve’s expected announcement regarding interest rates later today.

The Dow Jones dropped nearly 53 points, or 0.13%, to 41,553 at 9:48 AM EDT, while the S&P 500 remained virtually flat at 5,634. The Nasdaq Composite, on the other hand, saw a slight gain of nearly 12 points, or 0.07%, reaching 17,640.

The Fed is widely anticipated to lower interest rates following its two-day monetary policy meeting, but the magnitude of the cut remains uncertain. According to the FedWatch Tool by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group, the probability of a 25 basis point cut stands at 37%, while a 50 basis point cut sits at 63%.

The volatility index, known as the “fear index,” rose 6.6% to 18.78, indicating increased uncertainty in the market. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield added 1.2% to 3.688%.

The US dollar index decreased 0.15% to 100.74, while the euro gained 0.17% against the dollar, trading at $1.1133.

In the precious metals market, gold saw a modest increase of 0.1% to $2,572 per ounce, while silver fell 0.9% to $30.43.

Oil prices dipped slightly, with global benchmark Brent crude trading at $73.42 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $69.73.

The market’s performance reflects the anticipation surrounding the Fed’s decision on interest rates, which is expected to have a significant impact on the global economy. Investors are closely watching for clues on the central bank’s future course of action and its potential impact on inflation and economic growth.
