Wed Sep 18 13:21:54 UTC 2024: ## China Sanctions US Defense Firms Over Taiwan Arms Sales

**BEIJING** – China has imposed sanctions on nine US defense firms in retaliation for arms sales to Taiwan, citing violations of the “One China” principle and infringement on China’s sovereignty and security interests.

The sanctions, which took effect Wednesday, include asset freezes and prohibitions on transactions with the firms. The targeted companies include Sierra Nevada Corporation, Stick Rudder Enterprises LLC, Cubic Corporation, S3 Aerospace, TCOM Ltd Partnership, TextOre, Planate Management Group, ACT1 Federal, and Exovera.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated that China strongly condemns and opposes the US arms sales, considering them a serious breach of international law and a destabilizing factor in the region.

The sanctions come amid heightened tensions between China and the US over Taiwan. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province, while the US maintains its commitment to Taiwan’s defense and supports its democratic system.

The announcement follows a series of other events, including the UK government’s recent deal with railway unions to end strikes and the ongoing Edo State gubernatorial election in Nigeria, which is drawing scrutiny over potential electoral irregularities.
