**Washington, D.C.** – Vladimir Kara-Murza, a prominent Russian activist and political figure, was welcomed with open arms by U.S. lawmakers on Capitol Hill Tuesday, marking his return to freedom after months of imprisonment in Russia. Kara-Murza was part of a major prisoner exchange between the U.S. and Russia last month, the largest of its kind since the Cold War.
Senators and Representatives praised Kara-Murza for his unwavering commitment to human rights and democracy in Russia, highlighting his courage in the face of threats and persecution. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Ben Cardin lauded him as “an inspiration for so many people around the world.”
Kara-Murza, a deputy leader of the People’s Freedom Party, had been arrested in Russia in April 2022 on charges of treason and spreading disinformation about the Russian military. He had also survived two suspected poisoning attempts, highlighting the dangers of speaking out against the Kremlin.
“Surreal doesn’t come close to describing what I feel – just a few weeks ago sitting in a maximum-security prison in Siberia and now seeing so many friends in the halls of the U.S. Congress,” Kara-Murza said, expressing his gratitude for the public’s support.
Kara-Murza’s release was part of a broader prisoner swap, with the Biden administration securing the freedom of 16 Americans in exchange for the release of eight Russian nationals.
Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O’Brien, acknowledged Kara-Murza’s significant contribution to the Global Magnitsky Act, a bipartisan legislation that empowers the U.S. to sanction human rights abusers.
Senator Chris Coons, while celebrating Kara-Murza’s return, stressed that Russia continues to hold numerous political prisoners, a testament to Putin’s fear of his own people and the fight for democracy.
Kara-Murza’s return to freedom is a beacon of hope for human rights activists and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for democracy and freedom in Russia.
