The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is threatening to strike Stellantis, alleging the automaker is failing to uphold commitments outlined in their 2023 labor agreement. UAW President Shawn Fain, in a livestream on Tuesday, accused Stellantis of prioritizing profits over its obligations to American workers.
“Stellantis is one of the most profitable automakers in the world…Stellantis is rolling in the dough,” Fain stated.
Specifically, the UAW points to the failure of Stellantis to reopen a factory in Belvidere, Illinois, as outlined in the contract, as well as a potential shift in production of the Dodge Durango from Michigan to Canada.
“We’re damn sure not going to turn around and let Stellantis violate our agreement,” Fain said, adding that the union has filed grievances with 28 local Stellantis unions and will be conducting strike authorization votes.
Stellantis, in a statement, countered the allegations, claiming they are committed to protecting U.S. manufacturing jobs and that the commitments made during negotiations span the entire 4-year agreement. The automaker also denied any confirmed plans to shift Durango production.
“A strike does not benefit anyone,” the statement added.
The UAW is aiming to build on the gains it secured in last year’s contracts with General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis. The union is currently organizing workers at Volkswagen’s Tennessee plant and seeking to expand its presence in the non-unionized auto sector.
