Wed Sep 18 01:29:13 UTC 2024: ## UAW Threatens Strike Against Stellantis Over Broken Promises
**Detroit, MI** – The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has announced plans to hold strike authorization votes at one or more Stellantis plants in response to the automaker’s alleged violation of a collective bargaining agreement. UAW President Shawn Fain accused Stellantis of failing to honor its commitments to reopen the Belvidere assembly plant in Illinois and to build the Dodge Durango in Detroit.
Fain claimed that Stellantis plans to move production of the Dodge Durango to Canada, a move he described as a “flagrant violation” of the contract and a threat to thousands of American jobs. He also criticized the company for delaying investment in the Belvidere plant until after the current contract expires.
“This company will not stop at Belvidere,” Fain warned. “There comes a time when we have to stand up. For our UAW family at Stellantis, that time is now.”
The UAW’s contract with Stellantis, General Motors, and Ford includes a provision allowing union members to strike over any job protection violations or plant closures. This clause, Fain emphasized, gives the UAW the power to act against Stellantis’s alleged breaches of their agreement.
Fain asserted that Stellantis, despite being one of the most profitable auto companies in the world, is attempting to shirk its responsibilities to American workers. He vowed that the UAW is prepared to take strike action to ensure that the company fulfills its commitments.
Stellantis has not yet publicly responded to the UAW’s accusations or the threat of strike action.
