**New York, NY** – Starting Wednesday, September 18th, Americans can finally renew their passports online! The U.S. Department of State, after a successful two-month beta program, is rolling out its online passport renewal system nationwide.
Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma announced the news at a travel conference in New York. He said the department has been working hard to address the rising demand for consular services, including passport renewals, by hiring more staff, bringing in experts, and upgrading its website.
“Tomorrow, online passport renewal will go live for the first time ever for the entire country,” Verma stated.
The online renewal process is expected to be popular, with the State Department anticipating that nearly half of all passport renewals will be completed digitally in the future. While the online process is convenient, there are some qualifications: applicants must be located within the United States and their passports cannot have been expired for more than five years.
However, while the process is more convenient, it won’t necessarily be faster. Applicants should expect similar processing times as the traditional method.
With this new digital option, Americans can look forward to a more convenient and efficient way to renew their passports.
