**Flint, Michigan** – Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has announced he will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s upcoming US visit next week.
Speaking at a campaign event in Flint, Michigan, Trump described Modi as “fantastic” while simultaneously labeling India a “very big abuser” in trade.
“He’s fantastic. I mean, fantastic, man. A lot of these leaders are fantastic,” Trump told supporters. “They’re not a little bit backward. They’re at the top of their game and they use it against us. But India is very tough, Brazil is very tough. I can tell you, every one.”
Trump did not elaborate on the specifics of the meeting with Modi.
Modi is scheduled to visit the US from Saturday, attending a Quad group summit hosted by President Biden, as well as the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He will also meet with members of the Indian-American community.
Trump and Modi were known to have a close relationship during Trump’s first term as president. During Trump’s 2020 visit to India, Modi organized a massive rally at the world’s largest cricket stadium in his honor.
Trump’s comments highlight the ongoing trade tensions between the US and India, with Trump accusing India of using its economic strength to the detriment of the US.
