Thu Sep 19 05:07:00 UTC 2024: ## NHS on the Brink: Report Calls for Radical Overhaul, Including Abolition

**London, UK -** The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is facing a crisis, with multiple reports highlighting its failings and urging drastic reform. The latest report, “The Denationalisation of Healthcare,” by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), advocates for scrapping the NHS altogether and replacing it with a social health insurance system similar to that found in the Netherlands.

The report cites the UK’s poor performance compared to other Western European nations in key health metrics such as avoidable mortality rates, cancer survival rates, and waiting times for treatment. The UK’s “avoidable mortality rate” is higher than any other country in Western Europe except Greece, with the country consistently ranking poorly in international comparisons.

The IEA argues that the NHS is neither efficient nor effective, despite spending a greater proportion of GDP on healthcare than several countries performing better. It highlights the Netherlands as a successful example of a social health insurance system, noting that the Dutch offered faster access to various surgeries and procedures in 2023 than the NHS did in 2019.

“Even if that change were desirable, would England’s political system ever maintain a consistent direction for NHS reform for 20 years?” questions Prof Gwyn Bevan, emeritus professor of policy analysis at the London School of Economics.

The report’s call for the complete overhaul of the NHS has sparked debate. While some, like Professor Karol Sikora, ex-director of the World Health Organisation Cancer programme, support the radical shift, others remain skeptical.

This latest report adds to a growing chorus of voices demanding change for the NHS, with the pressure mounting on the government to address the health service’s failings and implement meaningful reforms.
