The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has accused top players Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri of deliberately skipping the Davis Cup tie against Sweden last week, despite claiming injury. This accusation comes in the wake of India’s crushing 0-4 defeat against Sweden, which AITA Secretary Anil Dhupar attributed to the absence of key players.
Nagal, who reportedly had a back injury, is now set to play an ATP tournament in China. Dhupar questioned Nagal’s recovery, suggesting that the player may have exaggerated his injury to avoid playing for India.
AITA also criticized Mukund Sasikumar, who was suspended by the association but was still requested to play by the team captain. Sasikumar refused, despite the captain’s attempts to overturn his suspension.
In a statement, AITA emphasized the importance of Davis Cup, highlighting that it is more than just a tennis tournament; it’s about national pride and inspiring future generations. The association also detailed its efforts to develop tennis in India, citing numerous tournaments organized and coaches trained.
However, the statement sparked further controversy, as Nagal, Bhambri, and Sasikumar all declined to comment on the accusations. Former players, including Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja, have also questioned AITA’s management practices.
The controversy surrounding the Davis Cup loss highlights a growing rift between the AITA and its players. The new AITA committee, due to be elected in October, will have to address these issues and find a way to ensure the national team has the best possible representation in future competitions.
