**SRINAGAR:** The first phase of the 2024 Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections saw a record 61.11% voter turnout across 24 constituencies in seven districts, according to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). Voting concluded peacefully on September 18th, with over 23.27 lakh voters casting their ballots.
The elections covered constituencies in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions, with significant participation from youth voters, particularly first-time voters. A total of 5.66 lakh young voters between the ages of 18 and 29 participated, with 10,261 male and 9,329 female first-time voters.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) ensured a smooth and transparent voting process, establishing 3276 polling stations with 100% webcasting across all constituencies. Special arrangements were made to facilitate participation from Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and voters above the age of 85.
The elections were conducted under strict security measures, with security beefed up across the region, particularly in Srinagar ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election rally.
The successful completion of the first phase of the elections marks a significant step in strengthening democracy in Jammu and Kashmir.
