**COLOMBO, SRI LANKA** – New Zealand got off to a strong start in the first Test against Sri Lanka, with openers Kane Williamson and Tom Latham putting on a solid partnership. Williamson, who scored 40 runs off 62 balls, and Latham, who reached 70 runs off 107 balls, batted patiently and steadily against the Sri Lankan bowling attack.
The duo hit several boundaries throughout their innings, with Latham in particular being particularly aggressive, smashing sixes and fours with ease. However, the partnership was eventually broken when Williamson was dismissed by Prabath Jayasuriya, caught by Sadeera Samarawickrama.
