Wed Sep 18 15:23:00 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lankan Batsman Kamindu Mendis Ties World Record with Century Against New Zealand

**Colombo, Sri Lanka:** Kamindu Mendis, the left-handed Sri Lankan batsman, has etched his name in the history books by equaling a world record previously held solely by Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel.

Mendis achieved this remarkable feat by scoring a century on the first day of the first Test match against New Zealand. With his 50-run mark, he became the second batsman, alongside Shakeel, to score more than 50 runs in an innings in seven consecutive Test matches. This puts him in esteemed company, including Sunil Gavaskar, Bert Sutcliffe, Saeed Ahmed, and Basil Butcher.

Mendis’ impressive run began with his debut against Australia in Galle in 2022, where he scored 61 runs. He followed this with twin centuries in his second Test match against Bangladesh in March 2024. He continued his strong form in the fourth Test match against England, delivering a century in the second innings. The 25-year-old also showcased his prowess with scores of 74 and 4 in the Lords Test match.

Mendis’ century against New Zealand marks his seventh consecutive Test innings with a score exceeding 50 runs. If he manages to achieve another half-century in the second Test match, he will surpass Shakeel and become the sole record holder in world cricket.
