**Moscow, Russia** – Scientists at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) have developed a new and highly effective way to monitor the properties of polymers throughout their lifecycle, from manufacturing to application. The innovation utilizes single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as sensors, offering a unique and scalable solution for various industrial applications.

The study, published in the journal *Carbon*, highlights a simple yet innovative approach: integrating ultrathin and highly porous SWCNT films into the polymer material during its production. These films act as passive sensors, continuously monitoring the polymer’s properties without impacting its overall performance or degrading its inherent qualities.

“The key to this breakthrough lies in the flexibility and adaptability of our single-walled carbon nanotubes,” explains Hassaan Ahmad Butt, a research scientist from Skoltech Photonics. “By adjusting the thickness of the SWCNT films, we can fine-tune their sensitivity for specific applications. This allows us to monitor polymers across various stages of their life, from initial manufacturing to their final use.”

The research team, comprised of scientists from Skoltech, Jiangsu University (China), and Belarusian State University, emphasizes the potential of this technology to revolutionize polymer manufacturing and quality control. The ability to continuously monitor polymers’ properties opens new doors for optimizing production processes, ensuring consistent quality, and even predicting potential failures.

“We are proud of this collaboration with our international partners,” says Dmitry Krasnikov, an assistant professor at Skoltech Photonics. “This joint effort demonstrates the synergistic benefits of global research partnerships and highlights the immense potential of carbon nanotubes in diverse applications.”

This latest development further underscores Skoltech’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of nanomaterial research and its dedication to translating innovative solutions into practical applications. The team continues to work on various projects utilizing SWCNTs for diverse purposes, including multifunctional coatings, mechanically enhanced nanocomposites, and ultra-sensitive sensors.

This groundbreaking research holds immense promise for the future of polymer manufacturing and opens new avenues for optimizing material properties and improving industrial processes.
