Wed Sep 18 23:12:16 UTC 2024: ## India Moves Towards Simultaneous Elections: Kovind Panel’s Recommendations Accepted
**New Delhi, September 18, 2024:** The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the recommendations of a high-level committee, headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, for holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. This decision, announced by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to make the Indian democracy more vibrant and participative.
The committee, which submitted its report in March 2024, suggests a phased implementation. The first phase will see simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections, followed by municipal and panchayat elections within 100 days of the general election.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a strong advocate of simultaneous polls, hailed the decision as a “giant stride towards electoral reforms,” emphasizing its benefits for a cleaner and more financially efficient election process.
However, the Congress party, through its president Mallikarjun Kharge, vehemently opposed the proposal, calling it “impractical” and detrimental to the country’s federal structure.
The Kovind panel’s recommendations, spanning over 18,000 pages, include constitutional amendments, a common electoral roll, and a single voter ID card. The implementation of these recommendations will involve detailed discussions and legal processes, with no specific timeline announced.
While the government seeks consensus on this crucial reform, concerns remain about its impact on state rights and the potential for disrupting the federal balance. The opposition has expressed apprehensions about the proposed changes, which they believe could undermine the principles of federalism and democratic diversity.
The implementation of this ambitious reform will require significant political will and consensus-building, as it demands a two-third majority in both houses of Parliament.
