Wed Sep 18 14:37:00 UTC 2024: ## Senate Democrats Stage Show Vote on IVF Bill, While Republicans Push for Bipartisan Solution

**WASHINGTON, D.C. -** The Senate witnessed a heated debate on Tuesday as Democrats pushed for a bill guaranteeing nationwide access to IVF, only to see it fail due to a lack of support from Republicans. The legislation, spearheaded by Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), aimed to address access to family building, assistance to veterans, and supersede any state laws restricting IVF.

Duckworth’s bill was met with fierce opposition from Republicans, who accused Democrats of using IVF as a political ploy to push for broader abortion legislation. Several Republican senators pointed out that Democrats had repeatedly blocked a bipartisan bill that offered comprehensive protections for IVF.

Senator Katie Britt (R-Alabama) and Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) introduced a bill in May that would have prohibited states from restricting access to IVF services, authorized states to implement health and safety standards, and banned states from receiving Medicaid funding if they banned access to IVF. This bill was, however, blocked by Senate Democrats twice, preventing it from reaching a vote.

Senator Cruz argued that Democrats’ “show vote” on Duckworth’s bill was a ploy to “stoke baseless fears about IVF and push their broader political agenda.” He asserted that there was no senator who opposed IVF and that Republicans supported both access and protections for the procedure.

Republicans expressed concern that Duckworth’s bill would federalize abortion legislation and overturn religious freedom protections. They also criticized the bill for potentially legalizing practices unrelated to IVF, such as genetic engineering and commercial surrogacy.

The failure of Duckworth’s bill highlights the partisan divide on the issue of IVF, with Democrats pushing for a broad federal mandate and Republicans advocating for a bipartisan solution that focuses on protecting access while ensuring religious freedom and ethical considerations.
