**CHARLOTTE, NC** – The ACC is reportedly exploring a new revenue structure in an attempt to appease Florida State and Clemson, both of whom are seeking a way out of the conference. The move comes amid a period of unprecedented conference realignment and the dominance of the SEC and Big Ten in terms of both football success and financial power.
According to Yahoo Sports, the ACC presidents have considered a plan that would create a separate revenue pool distributed based on media value metrics, primarily focusing on television viewership for football and potentially basketball. This would likely benefit high-profile programs like Florida State and Clemson, who currently receive an equal share of revenue under the current television agreement.
The proposed revenue structure is intended to address the lawsuits filed by both schools seeking an exit path from the ACC’s grant of rights, which binds member schools until 2036. The ACC is also exploring the possibility of shortening the timeline of the grant of rights, a move that would need approval from at least two-thirds of the conference’s member schools.
This is not the only step the ACC is taking to try and bridge the financial gap with the SEC and Big Ten. Earlier this year, the conference approved a “success initiative” policy that awards additional funds to football programs that achieve certain benchmarks, such as qualifying for the College Football Playoff or ranking in the Top 25.
The future of the ACC has been uncertain as other conferences have experienced dramatic shifts. Texas and Oklahoma joined the SEC, while Oregon, USC, Washington and UCLA moved to the Big Ten. The Pac-12, once on the brink of collapse, is now poised to welcome Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State.
Florida State’s push for a potential exit from the ACC came after their undefeated season last year was overshadowed by their exclusion from the College Football Playoff. Clemson, a consistent national contender, has also expressed frustration with the current state of the conference.
The new revenue structure, if implemented, could be a major step in the ACC’s efforts to retain its two most prominent football programs and maintain its competitive standing in the ever-changing landscape of college athletics.
