Pittsburgh’s newest professional sports team, the USL W League’s newest addition, has officially been named the **Pittsburgh Riveters**, a nod to the city’s industrial heritage. The team revealed its name and logo on Wednesday morning, showcasing a familiar black and yellow color scheme and prominently featuring the image of Rosie the Riveter, a symbol of female empowerment and resilience dating back to World War II.
The name “Riveters” was selected through a fan poll, garnering 53% of the nearly 10,000 votes. The logo, featuring Rosie the Riveter, further solidifies the team’s connection to Pittsburgh’s past, representing strength, unity, and courage, values that the organization wants its players and fans to embrace.
“Rosie the Riveter is more than just an image from our past,” said Jeff Garner, President of Pittsburgh Riveters SC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, “she’s a symbol of what we believe in as an organization.”
The Riveters will begin play in the 2025 USL W League season, calling Highmark Stadium their home. They are owned and operated by the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC ownership group. The USL W League is a pre-professional league for women, featuring college-aged players and recent graduates.
“We’re already hard at work building the inaugural Riveters’ team,” said Dan Visser, sporting director of the Riveters and Riverhounds, “and are very excited about the level of talent we’ll be able to showcase on the field next summer.”
