**New Delhi:** The Narendra Modi-led Union government has given its approval to the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, aiming to align elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. This decision follows a recommendation from a high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
The proposal, aiming to conduct synchronized elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies in a two-phase process, has been met with mixed reactions from political parties.
While 32 parties, including the BJP and its allies, have expressed support, 15 parties, including five opposition parties in power in states, have voiced their opposition.
The proposed constitutional amendment will require a two-thirds majority in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. While the NDA currently holds a majority in the Lok Sabha, achieving the necessary votes in the Rajya Sabha remains a significant challenge.
The government will need to secure the support of opposition parties to push the amendment bills through parliament. The upcoming winter session will be crucial in determining the fate of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal.
Supporters argue that simultaneous polls will reduce election expenditure and promote administrative efficiency. Opponents, however, contend that the move would curtail democratic processes and give an unfair advantage to the ruling party.
The proposed changes could have a substantial impact on the Indian political landscape. Whether the government can successfully navigate the political hurdles and implement the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal remains to be seen.
