A recent survey by the over-50s car insurance provider Saga has revealed that many Brits struggle to pronounce the names of popular car brands, especially those with foreign origins.
According to the study of 120 drivers, the most difficult name to pronounce was **BMW**, with only 3% able to correctly say its full title, “Bayerische Motoren Werke” (Bavarian Motor Works). The German brand’s name is often mispronounced, with most people using a British accent instead of the correct German pronunciation.
Another popular German brand, **Volkswagen**, also presented pronunciation difficulties. While 89% of Brits use a British accent to pronounce the name, the correct German pronunciation replaces the “V” with an “F” and the “W” with a “V,” resulting in “folks-vagen.”
Even **Nissan**, a Japanese brand, proved challenging for many Brits. Only 14% of drivers pronounce the name the same way as Japanese motorists, with most using “Nis” instead of the correct “Knee-san.” This reflects the company’s full title, “Nihon Sangyo” (Japan Industries).
Saga highlights that this difficulty in pronunciation extends beyond German and Japanese brands, with many Brits struggling to correctly pronounce car brands from other countries.
The survey suggests that while we may be familiar with these car brands, their pronunciation remains a challenge for many drivers, highlighting the cultural differences that can influence how we perceive and pronounce words.
