The legendary feud between Morrissey and Johnny Marr, the former bandmates of iconic 80s group The Smiths, has taken a new turn amidst swirling rumors of a possible reunion.
Morrissey recently claimed that the band received a lucrative offer for a 2025 tour and that he was willing to participate, but Marr “ignored the offer.” He also alleged that Marr is blocking the release of a greatest-hits album by the band and has acquired the rights to the band’s name, potentially denying Morrissey “considerable financial livelihood.”
However, Marr’s managers have strongly denied these claims, stating that Marr previously reached out to Morrissey through his representatives to protect the band’s name from misuse. They added that Marr registered the trademark because it was not owned by the band and that a subsequent agreement with Morrissey’s lawyers stipulated that the trademark is held for their mutual benefit. Marr’s team also confirmed that he has signed an agreement to assign joint ownership of the trademark to Morrissey, but it still requires Morrissey’s signature.
Marr himself addressed the tour offer, stating that he “didn’t ignore the offer – I said no.” He also clarified that he rejected a greatest hits album due to the abundance of existing compilations. He further emphasized that he has no plans to tour with a new singer.
The Smiths’ acrimonious split in 1987 and their subsequent legal battles have left fans with little hope of a true reunion. This latest development in their ongoing feud only reinforces the seemingly insurmountable divide between the two musicians.
