**Bulawayo, Zimbabwe -** A 29-year-old man, Prosper Mpofu, has been arrested for impersonating a doctor and stealing from a patient at Mpilo Hospital.
According to Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube, the incident occurred on August 17th. A 25-year-old woman from Magwegwe suburb, referred to Mpofu by a friend, sought his medical services. Mpofu agreed to the appointment and instructed the woman to bring US$120 to Mpilo Hospital.
After examining the woman and writing a prescription that included an injection, Mpofu requested the money to purchase medication on her behalf. He returned with some medication and administered an injection. The following day, the woman returned to the hospital and paid Mpofu the remaining US$20. However, no receipts were provided for either transaction.
The woman’s condition did not improve, and she contacted Mpofu, who instructed her to return for a review on September 17th and to bring more money for a change in medication.
On September 17th, a nurse on duty noticed the woman in the casualty ward and offered assistance. The woman revealed that her medical cards had been taken by Mpofu. Suspecting foul play, the nurse asked the woman to show her the doctor. The woman identified Mpofu, and the nurse then requested her medical cards from him. The nurse discovered that the prescription lacked sufficient information, and Mpofu claimed to be working at United Bulawayo Hospital.
Hospital staff investigated Mpofu’s credentials and discovered he was a fraud. The nurse reported the incident to the police, leading to Mpofu’s arrest.
Inspector Ncube commended the nurse’s vigilance, stating that she “saved the life not only of the patient in question but many who could fall for the same fraudster.” The police are investigating the matter further.
