Wed Sep 18 15:38:00 UTC 2024: ## Delta Journalists Urge Government to Act on Flood Threat, Insecurity and Education Crisis

**Warri, Delta State** – The Warri Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Delta State government to take proactive measures to address a range of pressing issues, including the looming flood threat, rising insecurity and a shortage of teachers in public schools.

Following a warning from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) of severe flooding in 20 states, including Delta, the NUJ has urged the government to expedite the evacuation of residents living in flood-prone areas. The Union also demanded that the N39.62 billion ecological fund and the recently released N3 billion for disaster management be utilized effectively.

On the issue of security, the NUJ expressed concern over the increasing cases of kidnapping, armed robbery and other criminal activities across the state. They called on the government and security agencies to take urgent action to combat the alarming crime rate, particularly addressing the menace of criminal herdsmen terrorizing farmers and contributing to food insecurity.

The Union also highlighted a critical shortage of teachers in public secondary schools, particularly in core subjects like Mathematics, English and basic sciences. They urged the government to address this shortfall urgently to salvage the state’s secondary education system.

In a bid to alleviate the economic hardship caused by the rising cost of living, the NUJ called on the government to design a subsidized transport system to cushion the impact of the fuel price hike.

Finally, the Union commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for ongoing landmark construction projects across the state, but urged him to rehabilitate link roads around construction sites. They also demanded greater transparency and accountability from the state government, specifically requesting monthly disclosure of internally generated revenue.

The NUJ’s call for urgent action on these critical issues comes as the Delta State government faces increasing pressure to address the needs of its citizens amidst a challenging economic and security landscape.
