Wed Sep 18 00:42:10 UTC 2024: ## North Korea Fires More Missiles, Raising Concerns Over Weapons Exports to Russia

**Seoul, South Korea** – North Korea launched a barrage of short-range ballistic missiles early Wednesday, marking the second such weapons test in a week, according to South Korea’s military. This latest launch comes amidst growing international scrutiny over North Korea’s alleged weapons trade with Russia.

Experts believe the recent missile tests are part of a broader strategy by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to bolster his arsenal and potentially supply weapons to Russia for its ongoing war in Ukraine. While Pyongyang denies any sanctions-busting weapons trade with Moscow, the regime has declared South Korea its principal enemy this year and moved nuclear-capable weapons to border areas.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that several missiles were launched northeastwards around 06:50 (2150 GMT). They are currently analyzing the data and have strengthened monitoring and vigilance in cooperation with allies Japan and the United States. Japan also confirmed the launch, with its coastguard issuing a warning to vessels to be cautious of any fallen objects and report them immediately.

Last Thursday, North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles, which it later claimed were tests of a new 600mm multiple rocket launcher. This was the country’s first major weapons test since early July.

The recent missile launches have sparked renewed concerns about North Korea’s role in the Ukrainian conflict. In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Pyongyang and signed a mutual defense agreement with Kim. A recent report by Conflict Armament Research revealed that missiles produced in North Korea this year are being used in Ukraine, fueling speculation about a potential arms deal between the two countries.

“Considering the resurgence of the war in Ukraine and Shoigu’s recent visit to North Korea, the latest missile launches could be for exports to Russia,” stated Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.

Yang further suggested that the missile launches could also be intended to instill anxiety among the South Korean public, particularly after North Korea recently sent thousands of trash-filled balloons southward as retaliation for propaganda balloons launched by South Korean activists.

Adding to the growing tensions, North Korea unveiled images of its uranium enrichment facility for the first time last week, with Kim emphasizing the need for more centrifuges to enhance the country’s nuclear arsenal. This disclosure has fueled concerns about a potential seventh nuclear test by North Korea.

“In light of the recent disclosures regarding its uranium enrichment facilities, (the latest missile launches) may be paving the way for North Korea’s seventh nuclear test,” stated Yang.

With North Korea’s nuclear weapons program consistently defying UN sanctions, the ongoing missile tests and alleged arms deals raise serious concerns about regional security and the potential escalation of the Ukrainian conflict.
