Wed Sep 18 23:12:31 UTC 2024: ## New Footage Released of OceanGate Titan Wreckage, Coast Guard Hearing Begins
**NEW YORK, NY** – Over a year after the tragic implosion of the OceanGate Titan submersible, the Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation has released new footage of the wreckage. The video, captured by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), shows the Titan’s tail cone resting on the ocean floor with outer panels ripped off, revealing exposed wiring and internal components.
The footage is being used as part of a two-week hearing, which began Monday, to investigate the cause of the implosion. The hearing will include testimony from 24 witnesses, including former OceanGate employees.
“OceanGate expresses our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died in the tragic implosion of the Titan,” the company said in a statement. “There are no words to ease the loss endured by the families impacted by this devastating incident, but we hope that this hearing will help shed light on the cause of the tragedy.”
On June 18, 2023, five people boarded the Titan submersible to visit the Titanic wreckage site 12,500 feet underwater. The passengers included British businessman Hamish Harding, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, French explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet, and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.
The submersible, built with carbon fiber and titanium, was heavily scrutinized for its design and lack of safety certifications. It was reportedly piloted with a video game controller.
Communication with the Titan was lost about 90 minutes into the dive, and the vessel is believed to have imploded soon after. A massive rescue mission ensued, but the Titan’s debris was found in five large parts on the sea floor about 1,600 feet from the Titanic’s bow. The passengers were declared officially lost on June 22, and some human remains were later recovered.
The Coast Guard hearing aims to determine the cause of the implosion and provide recommendations for potential litigation.
