**Mangaia, Cook Islands** – The new Island Government for Mangaia was officially sworn in on Wednesday, September 18th, with Numangatini Tangitamaiti Ariki presenting warrants of appointment to the newly elected council members.

Ngateina Rani, who won a closely contested election last month, was sworn in as the new mayor, receiving 153 votes out of a total of 300 cast. The other council members include:

* **Karanga Councillor:** Harris Tuarongonui Ngai
* **Tavaenga Councillor:** Tutai Tutai Jnr
* **Veitatei Councillor:** Maire Kareroa
* **Keia Councillor:** Mini Dean

The Island Government is responsible for providing efficient and effective governance to Mangaia, the second largest constituency in the Pa Enua. In her oath, Mayor Rani pledged to serve the people of Mangaia diligently.

A by-election will be held for the Ivirua constituency, where both candidates received the same number of votes, creating a vacancy.

Mia Teaurima, director of Pa Enua Services at the Office of the Prime Minister, urged the council to lead by example and carry out their duties responsibly. The event was attended by Poroa Arokapiti, Mangaia’s government representative, and family and friends of the council members.

The Island Council plays a vital role in delivering public facilities and services for the benefit of the Mangaia community, acting on behalf of the national government.
