Wed Sep 18 02:16:18 UTC 2024: ## Netflix CEO Defies Hollywood Tradition, Declares Streaming the Future for Big Budget Films

**London** – Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has made a bold statement about the future of film distribution, claiming that streaming, not theatrical release, is the optimal path for big-budget movies on the platform.

During a TV industry gathering in London, Sarandos emphasized that Netflix’s massive scale allows them to forgo traditional theatrical runs and still recoup their investment. “It’s unique to Netflix that we have enough scale,” he explained. “We can uniquely spend $200 million on a film and have enough scale of viewership to put it directly on Netflix without trying to recover some of the economics in the theater, which I think is a fairly inefficient way to distribute some movies.”

This approach, Sarandos argues, aligns perfectly with audience preferences. “Our members can watch a world of entertainment for a fraction of the price of a box set of The Sopranos in 2007,” he said. “And they don’t have to wait two months for all the episodes of a show to come out or for a film to finish its theatrical run. Audiences don’t care about windows at all. They never talk about it over dinner.”

Sarandos emphasizes that clinging to traditional business models is detrimental. “If you’re protecting the business, you’re pretty much dead,” he warned. Instead, he believes entertainment giants need to be constantly innovative and challenge the status quo. “We need to constantly challenge ourselves, to break [the business] and move our business forward on behalf of our consumers.”

His remarks are sure to spark debate in Hollywood, where the traditional theatrical release model remains deeply ingrained. However, Netflix’s success and Sarandos’ bold vision for the future of entertainment may force the industry to rethink its priorities and embrace the evolving landscape of streaming.
