Wed Sep 18 01:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Thousands Eligible for Free GP Visits Haven’t Applied: Government Urged to Expand Scheme

**Dublin, Ireland -** New figures reveal that while the number of people entitled to free GP visits has increased to 696,531, thousands who could be eligible haven’t applied. This comes as the Irish government considers expanding the free GP scheme to include older primary school children in the upcoming Budget.

Since August 2022, children aged six and seven have been automatically eligible for free GP visits, with a significant uptake of the program. However, a relaxed means test introduced last year for those aged eight to 69 has yet to see a large number of applications, despite the potential for 430,000 more people to qualify.

The HSE spokesperson, while unable to provide specific numbers on non-applicants, acknowledged that “thousands” of people might be eligible but have not yet applied.

Meanwhile, concerns are growing about the strain on GPs, particularly in rural areas, if the scheme is expanded. Dr. Denis McCauley, President of the Irish Medical Organisation, highlighted the need for “targeted measures” to support GP practices, including grants for new GPs, partnership incentives, and tax breaks for existing GPs.

The government faces a dilemma: extending the free GP scheme could improve access to healthcare for many, but it also requires addressing the existing strain on the GP workforce. The upcoming Budget will likely see a phased approach to any expansion, taking into account both the needs of the population and the capacity of the healthcare system.

While the focus remains on the budget and the potential expansion of the scheme, it is clear that many eligible individuals are missing out on free GP visits. The government is urged to consider effective awareness campaigns and simplify application processes to ensure maximum utilization of the existing program.
